English:
My name is Luz Celeste Matamoros, I am one hundred percent Mexican, and I am eighteen years old. Now I live in Oneonta and attend New York State University. I am studying Spanish, and I am specializing in early childhood education. My name was chosen by my parents. At first, I did not like my name because it is in Spanish and we are in the United States. However, over time, I began to realize that my name is unique and different from all the people around me. My dad wanted to call me Luz Elena, but my mom didn’t like it. My parents decided to name me Luz, but my mom decided to choose a second name for me. So, when my mom was in the hospital, I heard people talking about colors, and they said blue. Then my mom proposed the compound name to my dad, and the two agreed to call me “Luz Celeste Matamoros”. I say that I am unique to the rest of my brothers because I have a second name. I turned 18 on 20 April. Being the baby of the family is amazing to me. I can’t believe I’m 18, and I’m even more surprised to be in college away from my family. I thank God for being able to live 18 years; it is a gift.
This age means that I am entering a new chapter in my life where I need to be focused on the future I want. Every decision I make is important and will affect my future and present. At the age of 16, I realized that I was fat and decided to change. I started to moderate the way I eat and decided to go to the gym. Now I’m in the best shape I’ve been in my whole life. I am 5’1, I am short like my mom. I have my dad’s eyes. Many people say I look like both of them. My mom tells me that I have my dad’s eyes and face. But also, something my mom gave me are the freckles under my eyes like hers. The freckles inherited from my mom remind me that she will always be by my side wherever she goes. My parents have short fingers like mine. I don’t like my fingers; the people who detail them make comments and say they are witch-like fingers. Something I like about my physical is my skin and how it feels. I don’t give much importance to taking care of my skin, but I do take care of what I eat positively.
I grew up like my mom; I like to plan ahead. Personally, I am a simple girl; I do not like luxuries, and I prefer to be at home instead of going out. I don’t like expensive objects. I look like my mom; we both like to clean, cook, talk a lot, and we are hard-working. But at the same time, I look like my dad, we both like to clean the entrance of our house and also try to give what the people we love ask, even though we do not have much. I love preparing food for the people I care about. I like to make breakfast, cut fruit, pack a potato, a drink, and more. This is how I teach my love, preparing food. But one thing I don’t like about my personality is that I get upset quickly when they say stupid things. Sometimes I am rude and I do not have patience; this can make people who love me move away from me. I know that I must improve my patience towards others because it depends on whether I get along with my colleagues in a future job.
I want to be someone in this world. I want to have a job that will cheer me. I want to wake up in a good mood and wait eagerly to go to my work and not feel that I am forced just because I have to keep a schedule. I’m going to study because I want to be a bilingual teacher. I want to progress in this career because growing up, I was in bilingual classes and enjoyed the energy of the teachers and sharing with other students who were also Hispanic. I want to be a teacher and fill my classroom with laughter and good energy for my students to learn. Now I live in upstate New York in Oneonta to attend college, but I am from the Long Island next to Manhattan, New York, in a town called Southampton. It is a beautiful village with many trees, beaches, animals and space to have grilled meat or parties. Oneonta is five hours from my house and is a little different from what I am used to. One thing both Oneonta and Southampton have in common is that they are small towns. But in the north of the state there is not much diversity as in Southampton. I feel strange for not asking my parents for permission to leave; also for not being able to tell them every time what I do. I just need to go to their room to disturb them. Life away from my parents’ house is completely different.
My parents are from Mexico but from two completely different villages. My mom lives more with trees and mountains. My dad lives in an area where everything is flat and there is only one way to enter the village and leave the village. Where we live now there are many entrances and exits to enter Southampton or leave to go to another town
I am American because I was born in Southampton New York and Mexican because my parents were born in Mexico. When I travel, I walk a lot with my family, I go to the countryside in Atlixco However, when I go to Mexico I find it difficult to communicate with my family from Mexico because they speak Spanish more fluently than me. In Yanquilcalpa they speak Nahuatl. The people of Yancuitalpan only understand each other. My parents speak in a similar way, but my mom speaks faster. My mom speaks to my dad in Nahuatl, and that’s how my dad understands my mom’s language. I am not fluent in Nahuatl because my mom does not speak much at home, but I would like to learn it. It bothers me when I am with the monolinguals of that place, and I want to communicate, but I feel weird. It frustrated me because I don’t know if they’re talking badly about me. However, in Yancuitalpan they also speak Spanish, and this new generation does not speak much Nahuatl. I do nothing to improve and communicate in this indigenous language. My mom talks to us in Nahuatl when she is angry with us and we are doing something wrong. My mom talks to her brothers, and sometimes, when my mom is in a good mood, she translates what we don’t understand. In the same way, sometimes my brothers and I are speaking in English, and my mom does not understand, so we translate when it is not bad. I speak Spanish and English with my parents. My parents would like to understand English better, as they ask me and my siblings to speak English to them regularly. I do want to improve my Spanish; I want to improve the way I speak it.
It is an advantage to know a language other than English and to be Hispanic at SUNY Oneonta because it means that I have more opportunities and need to take advantage of them. It allows me to meet other people, think from another perspective, enter a variety of clubs that, on the contrary, people with only one language cannot. I don’t feel any different from the rest of the students. I feel like we all have the same opportunities if we work hard. If knowing two languages opens me more doors and hard work, wanting my bilingualism, i will overcome myself. I think I’m in the right place right now. I wanted to enter the Navy, instead of coming to SUNY Oneonta although now I’m glad to be here. My cultural heritage gives me pride in not being ashamed of representing my flag and my heritage.
