My Adult Life

There have been many changes in my life that have made me who I am today. When I moved from Guatemala to the United States at age five, it was definitely the hardest change of my life. I had to go live with my parents whom I had never met before in a new country and learn a new language. It was very difficult for me, but time helped me adapt. I was five years old when I met my parents who had already immigrated to the United States by leaving me with my grandparents. I never had another big change in my life until I moved housez to go to college. My parents thought it was okay for me to go to college, but I was worried that I was going to be away. I didn’t do much to prepare, but I think I made a good decision. I decided to go to college with my best friend so I wouldn’t feel lonely and so far it has worked because I’m fine being away from home. I am now in college focused on my studies and preparing for my future.

In the future, I hope to graduate from college and get a good job. Both of my parents only made it to fourth grade in elementary school. My father now owns a car cleaning business and my mother is a caregiver for the elderly. They are not professional careers, but they allow us to live well. I am the first person in my family to go to college and I hope I will be the first person to graduate. For my family, it is very important because it would make their dreams come true, to be able to give a better future to their son. For my Latino social group, it is also important and impressive because not many Latinos have the opportunity to have a college education in the United States. In the future I would love to work in a hospital as a nurse and have a professional career for a long time after college.

Without formal education, my parents were able to get good jobs and give their children a good future. I would define my social class as middle class because my parents own their own home and live only with their children. There are many stereotypes about the Latino community, for example, that we are generally poor and live with the whole family in a small house. There have also been times when I have been discriminated against because of my race and my origin; for example, in high school one day my class was going on a trip and we had to pay money, my teacher asked me if my parents could afford it, but she did not ask any of the other children; she assumed that because I was Hispanic I had no money for the ride. I think the Latino community needs to educate themselves and go to college to get careers and the stereotypes would end. I define myself as Latino because I was born in Guatemala and Spanish was my first language, although I live in the United States and speak English better than Spanish. As Latinos in the United States, we need to adapt to this country and educate ourselves so that we can succeed.

I have read literature, mainly history. I have learned that many people have been discriminated against during the history of the planet, such as the Jewish and African Americans. The literature I have read has educated me and taught me that these things are wrong. That’s why I have no problem talking to someone else of a different race or social class. I think a good example of a historical fact that explains my social class would be when the first people emigrated from Europe to the United States. They were looking for better opportunities and found great success here. It’s a good example because my family and so many people from my country have come to the United States in search of better opportunities and have succeeded.

My parents have taught me to be the best person I can be and this is represented in their achievement as immigrants in the United States. My parents have always taught me to work hard and study. I was also told to put my education first and to respect others. I have maintained these values because I believe they will make me a good person in the future and allow me to succeed. Now I have a girlfriend, but my parents don’t approve of her. They don’t approve of it because they think it will distract me from school and they also believe I’ll have a baby by accident. But I have different plans, I tell them that they are no longer in Guatemala and that they should not tell me who I can date or not. My parents don’t bother me now because they learned to trust me. I also know that I don’t want children and I don’t want to get married until I’m 25. When I am married and have my two children, I will try to be a good father with customs of Hispanic and American culture. I will tell my family to always work hard, be respectful, and study hard.

This is what I want for my family in the future and my family has now played an important part for the future I desire. My family wants me to have a good career and become a great father and I expect the same from myself. In 10 years I see myself already married and having my two children. I also see myself with a career and a home. I believe I will bring something good to the Hispanic community because I will set an example of what a successful Hispanic person is in the United States. My adult life so far has had some problems, mainly about who I want to be and where I want to end up. I have decided that I want to go to school and have a professional career and for my children I want the same. I want them to educate themselves and find good careers that they love. For now my future looks bright, my studio has helped me achieve it.

My adult life has made me very happy because I am fortunate to have loving parents, a home and an education. I think that’s what it takes to be happy and for me it’s what makes me happy. I wouldn’t change anything in my life because I’m too grateful for what I have. I’ve had some difficulties in the past about who I am, but now I think I know who I am and I know what I want. My family has supported me and I have been responsible enough to be where I am today. Now I am prepared for what the future holds.

  1. Wow, it’s a great history, and I feel uncomfortable with the teacher that think that when you are a Latin people you don’t have money, you are poor…

    What happens to our society?
